When you’re pursuing U.S. citizenship in Florida, you’ll find that there are a number of steps you need to go through before you can become naturalized. Here are some things to consider before you start the process.
You Need to Meet Certain Requirements
There are certain eligibility requirements you’ll need to meet before you can become a U.S. citizen. The first is that you must be 18 years of age. You also must have been a permanent resident for at least five years, or at least three years if you are married to someone who is a U.S. citizen.
You’ll Have to Fill Out Many Documents
The naturalization process can be complicated because there are different documents you have to provide, including the Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, proof of Permanent Resident status, proof of your marital status (like a marriage certificate or a divorce decree), two U.S. style passport images if you live outside of the U.S., proof of a medical disability or military service if applicable, and Form G-28 if you want representation to sit in with you at your naturalization interview.
You Need to Go to a Biometrics Appointment and Interview
At your biometrics appointment, you’ll be fingerprinted and photographed so that the FBI can perform a background check on you. Then, you’ll have to attend an interview. If you need to reschedule it, it could take several months to get a new appointment.
You’ll Have to Prepare for the English and Civics Test
One of the last steps of the immigration process is taking an English and civics test. You’ll need to prepare for both and pass in order to move on and become naturalized.
