Our chief aim at USILC is to help immigrants obtain legal status in the U.S. so that they can join their loved ones and live the American Dream. Knowing there are multiple routes that we can use to achieve the specific goals we are seeking on our clients’ behalf is fascinating to me. In my legal assistant position within the Legal department, I serve as a connection between clients and the attorneys. I coordinate the attorneys’ schedules, interviews, and appointments, and keep their clients informed concerning their specific processes. When I provide clients with positive updates, I share their joy and relief. I am also the last person who reviews their packets before submission. I speak both English and Spanish and can communicate with clients well in both languages.
I feel a certain camaraderie towards our clients, after going through the adjustment of status process myself. Through this, I gained an understanding of the intricacies of immigration law. Careerwise, I came to the immigration field in a circuitous way, after working in customer service for 10 years. My background also includes working for a cruise line, where I regularly interacted with people of different nationalities. It taught me the value of learning to communicate with, and understand, people from many different cultures – even in uncomfortable situations. I also learned to cooperate with others and pay attention to important details. All these skills are required in my current role at USILC.
During my off-time, I enjoy dining in various restaurants and sampling Italian dishes. At home, I indulge in reading both nonfiction and fiction – from immigration case types to works by Spanish novelists such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Traveling is also one of my passions, and cruising gives me the opportunity to satisfy my love of the sea and all its mysteries.
