Since joining US-ILC, I have enjoyed many different aspects of the Firm, such as the supportive network and the opportunity to work alongside knowledgeable, skilled colleagues. The Firm’s collaborative framework facilitates communication and expedites troubleshooting. This enables us to respond promptly to client needs.
I began my legal career in 2017 as a paralegal in an immigration law firm, motivated by my grassroots work supporting the local immigrant community. After managing immigration cases for more than 3 years, I pursued paralegal studies and a family law course to broaden my understanding of State and Federal court systems. My experience expanded to include two years in family law and exposure to the criminal legal system. I later returned to immigration law as a paralegal manager, training a team and building my own leadership skills over the next year and a half. However, I longed to interface with clients again and meet their needs more directly, which led me to US-ILC.
As a Duty Paralegal in US-ILC’s Client Affairs Department, I serve as a direct resource between clients with pending cases, and paralegals as well as other legal staff. This includes providing them with updates in English and Spanish, regarding their cases, and determining if there have been any changes in their circumstances that need to be assessed. I also respond to their queries and provide them with clarity and insight concerning their case status. My role is evolving into a more proactive approach that requires regularly contacting clients with long-term pending matters to help maintain consistent communication and ensure they remain informed throughout the length of their cases.
My previous positions contribute holistically to my current role, particularly my immigration law experience. I rely on my background daily to serve and communicate with clients, promptly address their questions, audit and review their cases, and proactively flag potential issues. My family law expertise, and exposure to criminal law, enables me to review cases comprehensively, especially when custody issues or criminal charges are involved. Outside of work, my spouse and family, which includes a senior dog and two cats, are very important to me. I also love to consume information. I stay informed through the news and legal journals, and by deep diving into historical subjects. Additionally, I am passionate about volunteering with grassroots organizations and participating in community work.
